Sana Syed, MD MS is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist with advanced training in Nutrition at the University of Virginia. She is on faculty at the University of Virginia in the Center for Global Health with an adjunct faculty appointment at the Aga Khan University, Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, Karachi, Pakistan with the overarching goal to study small intestinal structure and function in children who experience growth and vaccine failure in low- and middle-income countries around the world. Undernutrition afflicts 20% of children < 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and is a major risk factor for mortality. Linear growth failure (or stunting) in children is tightly linked to irreversible physical and cognitive deficits, with profound implications for development. A common cause of stunting in LMICs is Environmental Enteropathy (EE) which has also been linked to decreased oral vaccine immunogenicity. Dr. Syed hopes to applying big data/ computational methods to multi-dimensional datasets from human tissue, biomarkers from blood and urine along with clinical data to model large, complex systems; in this case malnutrition in global health in the context of EE. In this presentation, Dr. Sana Syed presents results from a collaboration with Dr. Don Brown at the UVa Data Science Institute (funded by Engineering in Medicine at UVa) showing application of Deep Learning computational approaches to identify morphological features of EE versus celiac disease and healthy small intestinal tissue.
