Our nation is facing an opioid crisis of unprecedented measure. Here in Virginia, more residents die from overdose than from car accidents each year. Research on community initiatives to address opioids indicates that a systemic response is critical for success. According to the Institute of Healthcare Improvement, “The complexity of the opioid crisis requires medical, legislative, behavioral, educational, and legal changes, and it requires that these changes be made in coordination with each other, at the same time. Communities will succeed only if they engage and align all actors to create systems that can prevent new individuals from becoming dependent on opioids, while supporting the recovery of those who already are.”

This panel will offer an overview of this kind of approach and local data about the scope of the crisis.
